What Conventional Medicine Misses About Autoimmune Conditions (And What Actually Drives Recovery)
After 15+ years in autoimmune recovery, here's what I've learned about why conventional treatment keeps you stuck—and what terrain-based wellness offers instead.
You're exhausted. Brain-fogged. Your joints ache. Your digestion is a mess. You've seen multiple doctors, tried countless supplements, followed every protocol you could find.
And you're still sick.
Worse, you've been told this is just how it is with autoimmune disease. You'll have to "manage" it for the rest of your life. Take your medications. Accept your limitations. Learn to live with it.
But what if everything you've been told about autoimmune conditions is missing the most important piece?
After 15+ years investigating my own autoimmune recovery and guiding hundreds of others through theirs, I've learned something critical: conventional medicine is wrong about autoimmune disease—it's looking at the wrong thing.
Let me explain.
The Fundamental Difference: Battleground vs. Ecosystem
Most of us were taught that illness is something to fight. That germs are invaders, symptoms are enemies, and your immune system has somehow turned against you.
This is the germ theory approach that dominates conventional medicine. It asks: "What pathogen or malfunction is causing disease, and how do we eliminate or suppress it?"
But there's another framework—one that changes everything.
Terrain theory says your body is an ecosystem, a garden, a landscape. And symptoms aren't enemies attacking you. They're messengers telling you something about the state of your terrain.
When the terrain is nourished and balanced, your body recovers naturally. When the terrain is inflamed, depleted, and dysregulated, dis-ease takes root.
This isn't just philosophical. This is biology.
Your nervous system is the gardener of your terrain. It decides what gets watered, what gets pruned, what gets protected. And here's the critical piece most practitioners miss:
If your system doesn't feel safe, it won't let you heal.
That's why you can take all the right supplements, follow the perfect protocol, do everything "right"—and still not get better. Because safety precedes strategy.
Your thoughts literally shape your hormone output and what your body chooses to produce. Your beliefs shape your inner state. Your nervous system state determines whether your body prioritizes healing or survival.
You can't supplement your way out of a dysregulated nervous system.
Why Autoimmune Isn't What You Think It Is
Here's what conventional medicine tells you: Your immune system is broken. It's attacking your own tissues by mistake. We need to suppress it with medications to prevent damage.
Here's what terrain-based investigation reveals: Your immune system isn't broken. It's responding to terrain imbalances and true invaders.
Autoimmune conditions aren't diseases in the traditional sense. They're your body's response to an internal environment that has become inhospitable.
Think about it this way:
If you plant a garden in depleted soil, with poor drainage, inadequate sunlight, and constant stress from pests—what happens? The plants struggle. They become susceptible to disease. They fail to thrive.
Do you blame the plants? Do you say the plants are "broken"?
No. You investigate the terrain. You restore the soil. You improve drainage. You address the environmental stressors.
Your body works the same way.
When I work with clients, I don't see "Hashimoto's" or "rheumatoid arthritis" or "lupus" as separate, distinct diseases that need different treatments. I see patterns of terrain imbalance—and the immune system responding exactly as it should to protect you from those imbalance and in response to very real invader!.
Elevated antibodies aren't the problem. They're the response to the problem. Let’s do strategic testing and uncover the “problem”.
The inflammation isn't random. It's your body's attempt to heal damaged tissue. Using strategic testing, we can KNOW what is triggering inflammation…when we know that, we can address it with simplicity and effectiveness.
The fatigue isn't laziness. It's your body conserving resources because your cellular energy systems are compromised and being used by other functions in the body “dealing” with what is sideways in your inner terrain and invaders.
Your body isn't broken. It's responding.
And once you understand what it's responding to, you can actually address the root causes instead of suppressing symptoms. Note: anytime we suppress the immune system, we open the body wider to be more vulnerable to attack and for invaders already onboard…what is causing the response in the body to produce the symptom…the ability to grow and become an even bigger problem because the innate immune system, your protector, has it’s hands tied behind it’s back.
The Three Terrain Pillars
In my practice, I've identified three foundational terrain systems that drive autoimmune activity:
1. Digestive Terrain
Seventy percent of your immune function lives in your gut. If your digestive terrain is compromised—leaky gut, dysbiosis, inadequate stomach acid, impaired nutritional uptake, poor bile flow—your immune system will be in a constant state of activation.
Most practitioners hand you a probiotic and call it good. I never recommend a probiotic without having a Gut Zoomer first. To recommend a probiotic without this level of information, can create issues, not solve them.
But here's what I investigate:
Why is your gut lining permeable in the first place?
What upstream factors are driving dysbiosis?
Is your nervous system state preventing proper digestion?
Are food sensitivities a cause or a symptom of deeper terrain imbalance?
Do we have significant parasite infection in the gut/bile/liver etc?
The gut is never the only issue. But it's almost always part of the picture.
2. Detoxification Terrain
Your body is constantly processing metabolic waste and environmental toxins. When your detox pathways—liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, skin—are overwhelmed or blocked, toxin burden accumulates.
And what does your immune system do with accumulated toxins?
It creates inflammation to try to eliminate them.
Most practitioners jump straight to aggressive detox protocols. IV chelation. Binders. Cleanses.
But here's what I've learned from working with hundreds of clients: forced detox without open drainage pathways makes people worse. Period.
You have to open the exit routes first. Drainage before detox. Always!
This is the nuance that weekend-certified practitioners miss.
3. Stress Response Terrain
This is the piece that changes everything—and the one conventional medicine almost completely ignores.
Your nervous system doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's intimately connected to your immune function, your hormone production, your digestive capacity, and your cellular energy.
When you're in chronic sympathetic activation (fight-or-flight), your body prioritizes survival over healing. Always.
Your cortisol stays elevated. Your digestion shuts down. Your immune system stays on high alert. Your detox pathways slow.
And no amount of supplements will override that.
I've seen clients spend thousands of dollars on protocols, only to finally get better when we addressed their nervous system dysregulation.
Safety precedes strategy. This isn't motivation talk. This is literal biology.
Why Healing Doesn't Look Like You Think It Does
Here's something I wish someone had told me 15 years ago:
Recovery isn't linear.
It doesn't go from A to B in a straight line. It spirals.
You'll have moments of progress. Then pauses. Then flare-ups. Then integration. Then breakthroughs.
And if you think the flares mean you're failing, you'll give up right when your body is doing exactly what it needs to do.
This is not regression. This is repair.
Every flare is an invitation to investigate. Every pause is recalibration. Every spiral—whether up or down—is sacred.
Your body is unwinding years, sometimes decades, of accumulated terrain imbalances. That doesn't happen overnight. And it doesn't happen in a neat, predictable progression.
Most practitioners don't prepare clients for this. They hand you a protocol and expect steady improvement.
But that's not how terrain restoration works.
When I guide clients through VFI (Vibrant Foundations Immersion), we spend significant time on this concept because if you don't understand the spiral nature of healing, you'll panic every time your body does something unexpected.
And panic—nervous system dysregulation—will interrupt your healing process.
What Conventional Treatment Gets Right (And Wrong)
I want to be clear: I'm not anti-conventional medicine.
Medications can be life-saving. A conventional diagnosis is not.
But here's what conventional treatment misses:
It only looks downstream.
Your thyroid isn't working? Take thyroid medication.
Your immune system is overactive? Suppress it with immunosuppressants.
You're in pain? Here's an anti-inflammatory.
These interventions address the response—not what's driving the response in the first place.
It's like bailing water out of a sinking boat without ever looking for the hole.
And after 15 years of investigation, here's what I know: Your body is showing you exactly where the holes are. You just need to learn its language.
Symptoms are messengers, not mistakes or an attack on the body.
The Investigative Approach
When someone comes to me with autoimmune conditions, I don't hand them a protocol.
I investigate.
I ask:
What does your bloodwork show when we look at functional optimal ranges, not just standard ranges?
What patterns emerge when we map your symptom clusters?
What's the state of your nervous system? Are you in chronic survival mode?
What's your digestive capacity? Your detox burden? Your stress response?
What does your lived experience tell us that labs can't measure?
What deeper testing, such as Food Sensitivity (learning what foods we take in daily are causing inflammation), Gut testing (learning exactly what is happening in the digestive system, what bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic components are at play), or Hormone Zoomer or Neural Zoomer (understanding what is happening in the brain tissue and what is causing that inflammation), Toxin Testing, etc.
Every client I've worked with has tried other practitioners before me. Often multiple practitioners.
And when they tell me what was missing from those approaches, it's always the same thing:
No one investigated their unique terrain. They just got handed the same generic protocol everyone else gets.
AIP diet. Supplement list. "Come back in three months." That just doesn’t work!
But you're not everyone else.
Your terrain is unique. Your triggers are unique. Your nervous system history is unique. Your recovery path will be unique.
This is what I teach in VFI—how to become your own best investigator. Because while I can guide you, you are the one living in your body 24/7. You're the one who knows what shifts, what helps, what makes things worse.
My job is to teach you the framework. Your job is to apply it to your unique terrain.
What Recovery Actually Requires
If you're reading this and thinking, "This sounds completely different from what I've been doing"—good.
Because if what you've been doing was working, you wouldn't be here.
Here's what terrain-based recovery actually requires:
1. Investigation over protocol Stop looking for the "right" supplement list and start investigating what your body is trying to tell you…and what it ACTUALLY needs.
2. Safety before strategy Address nervous system regulation first. Everything else builds on that foundation.
3. Patience with the spiral Healing isn't linear. The flares are part of the process, not evidence of failure.
4. Terrain restoration, not symptom suppression Address the upstream imbalances, and symptoms resolve naturally.
5. Trust in your body's wisdom Your body isn't broken. It's responding. And it's showing you exactly what it needs—if you learn to listen.
The Question That Changes Everything
Instead of asking, "How do I fix my broken body?"
Ask: "What is my body responding to, and how can I restore my terrain?"
That shift in perspective—from battleground to ecosystem, from broken to responding, from enemy to messenger—changes everything.
After 15 years of autoimmune investigation, this is what I know:
Your body isn't betraying you. It's communicating with you. Sometimes loudly with flashing red letters. But very likely the signs and symptoms used to be small….you body had to get louder and louder for you to hear it!
And when you learn its language, when you address the terrain instead of just suppressing the response, recovery becomes possible.
Not perfect. Not linear. Not quick.
But possible.
And Inevitable.
Ready to Investigate Your Terrain?
This is the foundation of everything I teach in Vibrant Foundations Immersion—my 6-month program where I guide you through systematic terrain investigation and restoration.
We don't use cookie-cutter protocols. We teach you the investigative framework so you can identify your unique terrain imbalances and build a personalized recovery path.
If you're tired of being told your body is broken, tired of protocols that don't work, tired of practitioners who don't investigate—[learn more about VFI here].
And if you want to dive deeper into this week's topic, I've created YouTube content breaking down:
What terrain-based wellness actually means
Why healing spirals instead of progressing linearly
How your nervous system determines whether you can heal
You, my dear, are not broken.
You're becoming.
And I'm honored to walk beside you in this investigation.
