The One Airway Nobody Thinks to Check — Your Nasal Microbiome and Systemic Health
Last week, we talked about the mouth as the origin of the gut — and the profound downstream effects of oral microbiome dysbiosis on the heart, brain, gut, and skin.
This week, I want to add another piece that most people — and most practitioners — completely overlook.
Your Nose.
More specifically: the nasal cavity, the sinus passages behind your cheekbones and forehead, the passage behind your eyes, and the channel that connects to your ear canal and your throat. All of it. It's one interconnected system — and when that system goes into dysbiosis, the ripple effects reach further than most people would ever guess.
The Sentinel Gate Nobody Guards
I think of the nasal and sinus cavities as a sentinel gate — the interface between the external environment and your internal systems. Every breath you take passes through this complex, biologically active landscape. And like your gut, it hosts a diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and in some cases, parasites and mold colonies.
When that ecosystem is balanced, your nasal cavity does its job beautifully: priming local immunity, maintaining the mucosal layer that clears debris and pathogens before they can go deeper, and regulating airflow into the lungs. It's your body's first line of filtration — the air filter of your internal HVAC system.
But when it goes into dysbiosis — triggered by pollutants, allergens, antibiotics, mold exposure, toxin exposure, chronic stress, or structural issues that impair drainage — the opportunistic organisms move in. And when they do, they don't stay put.
Think of it like a neglected garden pond. Stagnant water invites algae, fungi, and weeds — which choke out the healthy flora and spill pollutants into the adjacent streams. In this case, those adjacent streams are your lungs, your brain, your gut, and your ears.
The Direct Route to Your Brain
Here's what I want you to understand about the olfactory nerve: it is a direct, physical connection between your nasal cavity and your brain.
When dysbiotic bacteria or fungi establish residence in the sinuses, they can ascend via this nerve — bypassing the blood-brain barrier entirely — and contribute to neuroinflammation, olfactory dysfunction, and in clinically documented cases, neurodegenerative pathways associated with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and multiple sclerosis.
This is not theoretical. I see it in testing. When we run a Neural Zoomer on clients with progressive brain fog, cognitive decline, or neurological symptoms and find bacterial or fungal markers in the brain tissue, one of the first places I look is the nasal cavity.

For adults and children who have been on repeated rounds of antibiotics for recurrent ear infections, the nasal terrain is almost always part of the picture.
The lungs. Postnasal drip — that familiar sensation of mucus draining down the back of the throat — is not just annoying. It seeds pathogens directly into the lower airways.
