The Water You Drink Every Day Is Shaping Your Terrain — Here's How to Find Out What's In It

If there's one player in the toxin conversation that gets overlooked more than any other, it's the water coming out of your tap.

Not the food. Not the skincare. The water.

We drink it, we cook with it, we bathe in it, and most of us have never once stopped to ask what's actually in it.


I want to walk you through why this matters so much to your terrain — the internal environment your body is trying to recover in — and give you a clear, doable path for finding out what's in your own water supply. Because once you know what you're working with, you can actually do something about it.


“I Have Well Water, So I'm Fine” — Not Always True


I hear this all the time, and here's the honest answer: it's often true, and it's often not. Well water can absolutely be some of the best water available to you — clean, mineral-rich, untouched by municipal treatment chemicals. That reputation is earned.


But what I've learned after years of testing client after client is that well water is also a direct line to whatever is in the ground beneath it. And municipal water isn't off the hook either — it comes with its own, very different, set of exposures. Neither source gets a free pass. Both deserve a look.



This isn't a fringe concern. The Environmental Working Group's Tap Water Database — the most comprehensive public dataset on this in the country — found 324 different contaminants across nearly 50,000 U.S. water systems in its most recent analysis. Over 143 million Americans have PFAS (“forever chemicals”) in their tap water. More than 250 million have chromium-6, a known carcinogen with no enforceable federal limit at all. A lot of what shows up is legal under EPA standards and still well above the levels EWG's scientists consider genuinely safe. Private wells carry their own version of this story. They aren't regulated the way municipal systems are — nobody is required to test your well for you, ever. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Environmental Working Group both point to the same broad categories showing up in wells across the country: microorganisms like giardia, salmonella, E. coli, and cryptosporidium from sewage and animal waste; nitrate and nitrite from agricultural runoff, which is especially dangerous for infants; heavy metals like arsenic, cadmium, and lead leached from the ground or from your own plumbing; pesticide and industrial chemical residue; and in some regions, naturally occurring radioactive elements like radium and uranium. And if you're on well water specifically, there's one source I want to call out on its own, because it's the one I see missed the most: runoff from surrounding fields. If you live anywhere near agricultural land, rain and irrigation water move across those fields and carry whatever's been applied to them straight down into the groundwater your well draws from. That includes pesticides and herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, and the nitrate that comes with them. It doesn't have to be your field. A well can pick up runoff from land miles away, depending on the water table and the soil. This is exactly why “we're out in the country, our water is clean” isn't something to assume — it's something to test. So, well water or city water — the question isn't “which one is safe.” The question is “what, specifically, is in mine.”


What This Looks Like In My Practice


When I'm working with a client who has a multifaceted dis-ease process going on, depending on what symptom clusters we're finding, we often need to run toxicity testing. That typically includes heavy metals, bacterial components, fungal components, and more — because before we can meaningfully support recovery, we need root cause investigation. We need to know what's actually driving the terrain disruption, not just guess at it.
Here's what happens next, almost every time: when those toxins pop on a test, we have to figure out where they're coming from. And more often than not, this is happening at a point in someone's life when nobody — not a previous provider, not the client themselves — has ever thought to look at their water source. It's the blind spot. It's the thing that gets skipped because water feels so basic, so assumed, that it never makes it onto anyone's radar.
The categories we're watching for coming through water are consistent: heavy metals, chemicals, bacteria, parasites, fungus, and pharmaceuticals.


Let's Talk About Pharmaceuticals for a Minute

This is the one most people never even consider. You think about lead. You think about arsenic. You do not think about the fact that pharmaceuticals — other people's medications, moving through wastewater systems and back into water supplies — can end up in your glass. But they can, and the research on this has been building for close to two decades now.

Why does this matter to your terrain? Because these compounds can be very, very influential to your body, down to the cellular level — even at low concentrations, and even when they're not something you'd ever think to test for on your own. This is exactly the kind of hidden input that keeps a terrain destabilized no matter how well someone is eating or supplementing. You can do everything right on the nutrition side and still be fighting an invisible current if this piece isn't accounted for.


The Bigger Picture: Why Toxins Matter to Autoimmunity

This isn't just a “better safe than sorry” conversation. There is real, growing research connecting environmental toxin exposure to immune dysregulation and autoimmune processes specifically. Researchers have proposed several mechanisms by which toxins like heavy metals, PFAS, and industrial chemicals disrupt the immune system: they increase oxidative stress and deplete the body's protective antioxidants; they can bind to molecules in the body and alter their structure in ways the immune system no longer recognizes; they can shift gene expression in ways that disrupt normal immune function; and they can damage the gut lining, increasing intestinal permeability and adding fuel to the inflammatory fire. What you are reading right now may be validating something a lot of you already feel in your gut: that something in the environment is playing a role in your story, and it's not “all in your head” and it's not something you did wrong. Bioindividuality means your terrain responds to these exposures differently than the next person's does — which is exactly why testing and root cause investigation matter more than a generic protocol ever could.


How to Find Out What's In Your Water

If you're curious what your own water supply looks like, here's exactly where to start.

1. Check the Environmental Working Group's Tap Water Database. ewg.org/tapwater and type in your location. EWG works its way around to most municipal water systems roughly every seven to ten years, so depending on where you live, the data you find might be a few years old. That's okay — it still gives you a real place to start and a sense of what's historically been detected in your area.

2. If you're on well water, get it tested directly. Wells aren't covered by the EWG municipal database, so this step matters even more if that's your water source. Low-cost testing is often available through your local county extension office — a quick call to your county offices can point you in the right direction, and many programs run seasonal well-testing drives (the CDC recommends testing private wells at least once a year, ideally every spring). If that's not available where you live, there are private testing companies that work directly with homeowners; they run a bit more expensive, but they'll get the job done.

3.Know what to test for. At minimum, your water very likely needs to be screened for heavy metals, bacteria, fungus, parasites, and pharmaceuticals. Don't let a lab talk you into a bare-bones bacteria-only panel if you're trying to understand the full picture.

The Logical System: What To Actually Do Once You Find Something

Here's where I see people go sideways, and I want to save you the detour. When someone finds a toxicity result that's elevated — say, a heavy metal or a pharmaceutical marker comes back high — the instinct is almost always the same: “Okay, let's detox.” Immediately. Aggressively.


And detox is part of the process. But it is not the first step, and if you skip ahead to it, you're going to spin your wheels. Here's the actual order of operations, and it's the same one I use with every client, every time, regardless of what the specific toxin is:

First — identify the source and stop the exposure.

Before anything else, we need to understand where this is coming from and cut off the inflow. This alone, done well, gets you about fifty percent of the way there. Your body has a remarkable capacity to catch up and start clearing what it can once the exposure stops. This is the piece almost everyone skips, and it's the piece that matters most. This is drainage work, in the truest sense — you cannot support meaningful detox while the tap is still running.

Second — open the detox pathways, especially the ones that specific toxin uses.

Different toxins clear through different systems and different routes. Before you support detox in a general sense, we need to make sure the specific pathway that toxin depends on is actually open and functioning. Pushing detox through a closed pathway doesn't clear the toxin — it just recirculates it.

Third — support the body specifically around that toxin.

Once the source is addressed and the relevant pathways are open, now we bring in targeted support for the detox process itself, matched to what you're actually dealing with — not a generic “detox everything” approach, but something built around your bioindividual terrain and your specific findings.
It's a very logical system. It's genuinely not complicated to figure out what's going on and address it in the right order. It does take some time, some attention, and some willpower.

But you can do this. You really can do this. And it is so very worth the work.
