The Root Cause is Under the Root Cause: Why “I’ve Done All the Tests” Isn’t the End of Your Story
You've been told what your root cause is. Maybe it was leaky gut. Maybe mold toxicity. Maybe a long list of food sensitivities that left you eating the same six foods for a year.
And maybe you did everything you were told to do about it. You took the gut-support supplements. You remediated the house. You cut the foods.
And you're still not better.
If that's you, I want you to hear this clearly: you didn't fail. The investigation stopped too soon.
I'm Melissa Rose, an Applied Functional Medicine Coach (AFMC), and I've spent years working with people who live with multi-layered, complex conditions, the kind that don't respond to one answer. I've also lived it myself. Here's what I've learned about root causes, and why the real one is almost always one layer deeper than where most people stop.
A Finding Is Not a Root Cause
Leaky gut is real. Mold toxicity is real. Food sensitivities are real. But none of them is the bottom of the story.
They're findings. They tell us what is happening in the body. They don't tell us why.
So the question I always ask is the next one:
Why is leaky gut happening? What is wearing down the lining of the gut in the first place?
Why are there food sensitivities? What has the immune system on such high alert that ordinary foods are being seen as threats?
Why is the body responding so strongly to mold? Plenty of people are exposed to mold. Why is your body unable to clear it?
Twenty or thirty years ago, being able to say "your root cause is leaky gut" was a great finding. It moved the whole field forward. But we know so much more now. Stopping there today means stopping at the layer that's easiest to see, not the one that's actually driving things.
What "I've done all the tests" usually means
The second thing I hear almost every week is: "I've done all the tests."
When we look closer, what it usually means is this: you've done all the tests your doctor or specialist was willing to run for you.
Standard testing is designed to answer specific questions, and can be good at answering them. Maybe those tests found nothing, and you were told your labs are "normal." Maybe they found a few things….but they haven’t been read through a functional medicine lens…which shows clues pointing to deeper issues.
Either way, standard testing may tell us a little about what is going on in the body. It doesn’t tells us why. And without the why, you're left managing symptoms instead of supporting sustainable recovery.
How we build the picture
Here's how I work with every client. It's a process, not a template.
What do we already know? We start with everything you bring in: the tests you've already done, your symptoms, your history, what has helped and what hasn't. Nothing you've done is wasted. It all becomes part of the picture.
What do we need to know? From that body of information, we map the gaps. What do we need to know?
Testing that shows what and why. Then we choose testing specifically to fill those gaps. Not every test under the sun. The right tests for your questions.
Address the base layers. With that information, we can support the body at the bottom layers, the actual root causes, instead of chasing what's at the surface.
Specialized testing most people never get offered
This is one of the biggest differences in how we work. The testing available through Sagebrush Wellness goes well beyond a standard blood panel. It's chosen to look at the systems that so often sit underneath chronic symptoms and are rarely examined elsewhere.
You can see the full range of our most commonly used testing at sagebrushwellness.com/labs. We partner with about 50 different labs so if we need to look wider for the exact testing we need, we can.
Some of the more common ones we refer clients to for specialized testing are:
Gut Zoomer: Analyzes thousands of microbiome markers to pinpoint gut barrier breakdown and hidden pathogens driving silent, body-wide autoimmune flares. https://sagebrushwellness.wellproz.com/patient/product/46610
Neural Zoomer: Evaluates micro-inflammation and autoimmune reactivity in the nervous system to uncover the root behind persistent brain fog, memory shifts, and unexplained neurological symptoms. https://sagebrushwellness.wellproz.com/patient/product/90083
Food Sensitivity Profile: Maps out delayed immune reactions to specific foods so you can stop guessing and eliminate the exact dietary triggers fueling your symptoms.https://sagebrushwellness.wellproz.com/patient/product/48077
Testing is never about collecting data for its own sake. Each test answers a question we've already identified together. That's what makes it useful.
When the first layer isn't the bottom
Sometimes we find the bottom layer on the first round of testing. That's wonderful when it happens.
Often, though, the body has more than one layer. So we work with what we found first. We support those systems, and we watch how your body responds. If progress stalls, that's information too. It tells us there's another layer, so we test the next one and go deeper.
This is where experience matters most. Having worked with multi-layered conditions for as long as I have, I can often see where the next layer is likely to be, and which question to ask next when things get stuck.
Your body is always trying to get better
This is the belief at the center of everything I do: your body is always trying to get better.
It isn't working against you. Symptoms are the result of the body's protective responses to what it's dealing with. So the real question isn't "what's wrong with my body?" It's "what's in the way of my body getting better?"
When we understand what's in the way, real transformation can begin.
You're the expert on your body
~I don't do this work to you. We do it together~
You are the expert on your body. You've lived in it your whole life. You know things about it that no lab test will ever show. I come in with my expertise and a second set of eyes. Together, we build a shared understanding of what's happening and why.
Then we decide together what your plan looks like, including how much you can realistically take on right now.
We can't put a snow plow behind it
Once we know what needs to be done, we work on it in a tiered, gentle way. Your body has to be able to handle it, and so do you.
Recovery can't be forced. It can't be pushed. You can't put a snow plow behind it. It has to happen at the time, rate and speed your body can handle. Going faster than that usually means going backward.
That's part of what makes this work different, and part of why it lasts.
Key takeaways
Leaky gut, mold toxicity and food sensitivities are findings, not root causes. Ask why they're happening.
"I've done all the tests" usually means all the tests someone was willing to run, not all the tests that could explain why.
Good investigation starts with what you already know, maps what you still need to know, and chooses testing to answer why.
Root causes often come in layers. If progress stalls, the next layer is waiting.
Your body is always trying to get better. The job is finding what's in the way.
Recovery happens at the pace your body can handle, never forced.
Let's look at your layers together
If you've been told your root cause and you're still stuck, or you've "done all the tests" and still don't have answers, I'd love to talk with you.
Through October 31, I'm offering complimentary Root Cause Strategy Sessions: up to 30 minutes, one-on-one with me. We'll look at what's going on, what you've already tried, and what may be underneath it. Then we'll decide together whether 1-on-1 work or the Vibrant Foundations Immersion is the better fit for supporting your recovery.
No pressure. Just a real conversation about your body and what it needs.

Frequently asked questions
Isn't leaky gut a root cause? Leaky gut is an important finding, but it's usually a result of something else. Stress physiology, infections, nutrient depletion, toxic burden and immune activity can all play a role. Root cause investigation asks what is driving the gut lining to break down.
My labs came back normal. Does that mean nothing is going on? Not necessarily. Standard ranges are designed to flag disease, not to show where your body is under strain. A seasoned functional practitioner will read those labs much deeper and will be able to see clues around the deeper issues. Specialized testing and a careful look at your symptoms often reveal patterns that a standard panel isn't designed to catch.
Do I have to redo all my previous testing? No. Everything you bring in becomes part of what we know. We only add testing to answer the questions your existing results can't.
What happens on a Root Cause Strategy Session? It's a one-on-one conversation of up to 30 minutes. We talk about your history, your symptoms and what you've already tried. What’s worked, what hasn’t and what you want to accomplish. Together, we decide whether 1-on-1 work or the Vibrant Foundations Immersion is the best fit for you.
Warmest,
